Are you really lactose intolerant? {With a2 Milk™}

CATEGORIES:  Nutrition

As of late, I have to say I have been a bit obsessed with milk.

Milk in iced lattes, flat whites, cups of tea or a good old cocoa. I have been loving the stuff.

As a girl who spent 7 years dairy free due to the unpleasant diarrhoea aftermath from said milky beverage, this is quite a turnaround. But was that all because I was lactose intolerant, or where other factors at work?

So if you’re like me and know that standard milk is not doing you any favours, but not sure if it all about the lactose then let’s dive into the world of a2 Milk™.

The a2 Milk Company™ got in touch to ask if I wanted to find out more about it and to be honest I totally did. So many of my clients are not able to digest regular milk and that was my experience for years too (thankfully not now!). In fact, I tell most of my clients to avoid regular cows’ milk and to just consume things like butter or cheese as some types contain less lactose and are more easily digestible.

But it’s not just lactose that can be a problem. The milk proteins can also cause issues in digestion, especially if there is ‘leaky gut’ (inflammation of gut lining).

But as much as I love almond milk, there is nothing like a flat white made with real milk is there? Am I right?

So in comes a2 Milk™. Now I am not saying this is the solution for everyone because we all know one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to health, but there is some good research backing this stuff up as it might help you.

Studies have shown that people may be reacting to the A1 protein found in regular cows’ milk, and not lactose. a2 Milk™ is naturally free from the A1 protein and is more gentle on the stomach. Many people who previously thought themselves lactose intolerant, can drink a2Milk™ without any problems whatsoever.

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) also recently recognised this difference in proteins could be having an effect on IBS sufferers.

Following their updated IBS guidelines, Dr Anthony Hobson, Clinical Director of The Functional Gut Clinic assessed a number of his IBS patients in a cows’ milk challenge. While many people in the challenge had given up dairy thinking it was an intolerance to the lactose which triggered their IBS symptoms, it transpired in this challenge that with some patients the issues lay with the milk protein, A1 beta-casein. Meaning a switch to drinking a2 Milk™ instead caused no digestive difficulties.

I know – awesome.

Also, a2 Milk™ was recently featured on Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped series – all about de-bunking food science and lifting the lid on what’s really in the food we eat. You can watch the episode here.

Errrr what is it? Isn’t it highly processed to remove the ‘bad stuff’?

Thankfully not. You know I am not a fan of highly processed food and thankfully a2 Milk™ says….

Originally all cows’ milk contained only the A2 protein and no A1. Human domestication triggered the A1 protein to evolve into dairy cowherds and today the A1 protein is found in approximately 70% of cows. Regular cows’ milk is a mixture of A1 and A2 protein.

At a2 Milk we’re proud to be different. We work with our farmers to hand select cows that naturally produce only A2 protein and no A1. Nothing added, nothing taken away, just easier to digest cows’ milk.

So if you find that you are super bloated or stuck on the loo after that milkshake or latte, then you could not give a2 Milk™ a try. To find your nearest stockist just click here to see where is closest to you on the map, but I often see it in Waitrose.

As it may be the perfect solution to someone’s flat white……..amen for that!
